Preview: Women's parallel giant slalom

Europeans have won eight out of nine medals awarded in this event, including the three medals awarded when it was contested as an individual giant slalom at the 1998 Nagano Games.

Massachusetts native Michelle Gorgone finished eighth in the 2008-09 World Cup standings.

If the 2008-09 season was any indicator, the path to the Olympic title could once again go through Europe in 2010, with Austria playing a prominent role. Marion Kreiner and Doris Guenther finished 1-2 at the 2009 World Championships, and four Austrians cracked the top-seven of the 2008-09 World Cup standings: Guenther (second place), Claudia Riegler (fourth), Heidi Neururer (sixth) and Kreiner (seventh).

Another European rider to watch closely is Germany's Amelie Kober, who won silver at the 2006 Torino Games and claimed silver again at the 2007 World Championships.

The one non-European who has reached the Olympic podium in this event's history is American Rosey Fletcher, who won bronze in Torino but has since retired. The only American entry in this event is Massachusetts native Michelle Gorgone, a 2006 Olympian who finished eighth in the 2008-09 World Cup standings.
