Italy is located in southern Europe. It includes the large Mediterranean islands of Sicily and Sardinia. Vatican City and San Marino -- the latter is also a member nation of the IOC -- are independent enclaves on the Italian mainland.
Italy ranks 11th all-time with 101 medals (36 gold, 31 silver, 34 bronze). Italy won 11 medals in Torino, including five golds. Italy hosted the 1956 Olympic Winter Games in Cortina d'Ampezzo the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Torino.
Italy should contend for multiple medals in Alpine and cross-country skiing.
