Armenia is the smallest country by area among the former Soviet Republics. It is a landlocked republic located in extreme southeastern Europe between the Black Sea and Caspian Sea. It is bordered by Georgia to the north, Azerbaijan to the east, Iran to the south and Turkey to the west. It declared its independence in September 1991 and became an independent state later that year when the USSR disbanded.

Armenia: Olympic Tradition

Armenia first competed in the Winter Games as an independent nation in 1994, having represented the Soviet Union through the 1988 Games and then the Unified Team in 1992. It has never won a Winter Olympic medal.

Vancouver Outlook: Armenia is not expected to contend for a medal in Vancouver.
