Austria is located in central Europe, bordered to the north by Germany and the Czech Republic, to the west by Switzerland and Liechtenstein, to the south by Italy and Slovenia, and to the east by Hungary and Slovakia. It is primarily mountainous with the Alps and foothills covering the western and southern provinces.
Austria has competed in every Olympic Winter Games. It hosted the Winter Games in 1964 and 1976, at Innsbruck. Austria is fourth on the all-time list with 185 medals - 51 gold, 64 silver and 70 bronze, and has won at least one medal at every Winter Games. Ninety-seven of Austria's medals have come in Alpine skiing.
As usual, the bulk of Austria's medals should come from Alpine skiing. Gregor Schlierenzauer has won the World Cup in ski jumping and is a contender for gold in Vancouver.
